I can still remember, how I drove from the airport JFK to Manhattan for the first time. I sat in the back of an old cab with my friend Andrea, listening to sportsnews over the radio and the driver ran asked us where we were from. It was noon, the sky was covered and the skyline looked somehow dirty and rejecting. We drove through the tunnel to Manhattan and pushed ourselves through traffic with a thousand other cabs. I was tired (we had risen at 3 a.m.) and I didn't like what I saw. I only thought: what do I want here? And where is my bed?
We unloaded our luggage in the Milford Plaza Hotel, became even more tired and nevertheless walked along the 45th street toward the west. The area was not particularly inviting and my negative attitude strengthened. I can't say what I had expected, but it was not what I got to see. Finally we stranded at the pier from where - with the Circle Line - you can go around Manhattan via ship.
We entered the ship, looked for a nice place and off we went. Suddenly the sun came through and lit up Hudson River and the army of skyscrapers with a beautiful warm light. I do not know whether it was exactly thas moment, in which I fell in love with New York, but it has certainly something to do with these first few sunbeams.
In these days I already become envious when I hear someone talk about NYC and I ask myself, why am I in Germany and not there. Although I have to admit that I wouldn't want to live or work in NYC. I enjoy my holidays, but in the end the city is too large and too anonymous for me despite all glorious facets.
