Devils Marbles

Whoever believes to have seen the most beautiful of Australia without having visited the devils marbles is in error. It is a holy and magic place and that becomes perceptible also for a foreign visitor, if he climbs between the thousands of marbles, photographes them, experiences them. For the Aboriginees the 'Devils Marbles' embody the eggs of the rainbow snake. Well, as these eggs measure up to 10 meters in diameter we were really glad the snake was not in the area.

We arrived in the late afternoon, just in time for the sunset. To describe the colors with words is almost impossible. Even the pictures can't do 'em justice. I can only suggest to watch a few of the images and to believe me that all I did was scan and sharpen them a bit. I didn't chance color saturation at all. The light in the sunset was warm and close to orange, the colors in the morning change from complete darkness to light pink to a radiating blue within minutes.

Included in this gallery are a few shots from Kings Canyon which I would like to call a little brother of Americas Grand Canyon. Smaller of course, but no less fascinating. And the lights at sunrise change as beautifully as they do in Arizona.

Devils Marbles was a place which made me expose two films with 72 pictures in less than 30 minutes. The area is that impressive and overwhelming that any photographer has to control himself not to expose all his film...

1. Magic Place
This picture is one of two who were not taken by me. The honour belongs to my friend Beatrice. Thanks a lot for letting me use this beautiful image

2. Marbles
Slowly the sun sets and the rock gets its orange color

3. Light and Shadow
Impression

4. Open Range
Endless scenery

5. Sunset
The shade gets longer - in the foreground you can see the head and the hat of the photographer. The color of the marbles changes to a brilliant red

6. People
Two people, talking

7. Rockdetail
To work with focus (and out of focus) was a lot of fun at the marbles

8. Shadow
The sun goes down really fast. This picture war taken about 30 seconds before the sun... passed away - for the day

9. Morning
The next morning - I never before saw that particular color in nature

10. Marbles (II)
The main attraction, shown in many guides. And for the right reason

11. Abyss
Kings Canyon. There are people, sitting on the edge - sometimes. Nothing for me...

12. Rest
Early light, half hour after sunrise. Long shadows and ideal light

13. Dead Tree
This motive emerged rather coincidentally in my field of view. From the other side of the tree there was not much to see and I just turned around for no reason

14. Shadow and Light
Like Grand Canyon sun and shade changes within seconds

15. Clouds
On the verge of becoming a beautiful day
