The good luck with the weather was bad luck with the animals. For most of the species, accustomed to temperatures far below the ones we had, it was just too hot. Consequence: Most of the animals enjoyed their time in higher regions or more in the north.
Even in parts of the country where you can almost always see caribou or moose, the land was empty. But nevertheless, we managed to encounter a few new species, the best images are shown in this gallery.
1./2. Ears
The cow (2) with her offspring (1) almost crossed our way in the Chugach Mountains.
3./4. Moose cow
We were lucky. The moose cow crossed the street 10 yards ahead of our bus in Denali
National Park
5.-6. Mountain goat
In this part of the Seward Highway (between Seward and Anchorage) there are
mountain goats almost all the time, watching over the tourists :-)
7.-9. Santa Claus
10 miles south of Fairbanks there is this little town called North Pole.
Of course you can send letters to Santa Claus from there and of course Santas
reindeer can be found as well
10.-12. Musk ox
The musk ox was almost extinct in America. Now there are a few hundred animals left,
a good part of that number lives in Fairbanks
13. Caribou
The caribou is the non domesticated reindeer
